What an incredible evening!  On Thursday, October 17th, Next Door Solutions hosted more than 270 guests at its annual Light Up the Night – an evening of learning, networking, inspiration, celebration, and remembrance.

Held at the beautiful Corinthian Grand Ballroom in downtown San Jose, the event provided guests with a delectable array of sumptuous hors-d’oeuvres, and wines from Total Wine & More, while they viewed and bid on 29 exclusive items that included artwork, items for the home, entertainment packages, health and fitness packages, wines and other libations, jewelry, excursions, and more.

Modern Love, a Bay Area band, provided guests with upbeat music selections from the 80s and 90s that had many guests tapping their toes and nodding their heads. The evening program, emceed by NBC Bay Area’s Damian Trujillo, included a live auction, conducted by auctioneer extraordinaire, Frank Sunseri, who kept the audience competitively vying for six incredible items, including technology and sports packages, getaways to Napa and Disneyland, a starter kit for wine connoisseurs, and a chance to win the coveted Purple Purse designed by Serena Williams and donated by Allstate Insurance.  A new feature, Heads or Tails, had guests on their feet at they vied to be the last guest standing to win a fabulous two-night stay and wine tours in beautiful Paso Robles!

The evening’s program included Next Door Solutions awarding the Legislator of the Year award to Assemblymember Ash Kalra, District 27, for his accomplishments on key legislation addressing domestic violence and other legislation benefiting our community’s workers and families.

Bea Robinson Mendez was honored as one of Next Door Solutions’ founders and presented with a California State Assembly Commendation, presented by Assemblymember Kalra.  Bea spoke about the grassroots work of the women who labored to bring Next Door Solutions to fruition, laying the foundation for the vast array of services that are offered today. Thanks to their work, thousands of survivors and their children have been able to leave abuse and create a new life.

NDS’ annual video featured three survivors and their personal stories, with one of the survivors also addressing the guests; you can view the video at https://vimeo.com/nextdoorsolutionsThe evening closed with the traditional Candle Lighting and moment of silence, commemorating the seven lives lost to domestic violence in 2018 in our community.
