When Bonds Become Chains

Sometimes it’s fear of deportation or revenge against family; other times it’s the economic dependency, especially if the abuser provided the income. Often, it’s the sheer paralysis of finding a safe place to live, particularly in the Bay Area with its high cost of living. Ana Castillo, who works for the Next Door Solutions (NDS) advocacy housing program, recounts a recent case about a client we will name “Angela”.

Survivor Story 8: My son altered the future

My toddler’s instinct to protect his mother enabled me to escape from the darkness. I asked myself: what am I doing? My abuser was removed from our shared home and I changed the locks. A police officer referred me to Next Door Solutions.

50 years of Next Door Solutions | 1971-2021

In 1971, Bea Robinson Mendez, a victim of domestic violence, had little in the way of legal support, community advocacy, or a safe place to go. She recognized the lack of services to address the safety and unique needs of victims of domestic violence and their children. She rallied a group of friends, Latinas, and established a hotline number out of her garage, with each of the group members taking turns fielding the calls and providing information and support.

Statement from Next Door Solutions

We extend our deepest condolences to the families and friends of the individuals who were killed in the VTA Mass shooting on May 26, 2021. Labeled the worst Bay Area mass shooting in decades, many still struggle to understand why this happened.  It was discovered that the perpetrator had a history of inflicting violence and abuse on an ex-partner.
