Next Door Solutions stands in solidarity with survivors, reproductive healthcare providers and advocates in the reproductive justice movement. Every survivor and person deserves the right to bodily autonomy. Safe and equitable reproductive healthcare is essential to family and community health, safety, and wellbeing.

Statement from Next Door Solutions on Gender-Based Violence & Reproductive Justice

Next Door Solutions’ programs and services are based on a survivor-defined model; we recognize the survivor is the most knowledgeable person in regards to their life and all the circumstances surrounding and flowing through it. It also means that we don’t “tell” the survivor what they should or should not do. That includes their reproductive decision making.

When Bonds Become Chains

Sometimes it’s fear of deportation or revenge against family; other times it’s the economic dependency, especially if the abuser provided the income. Often, it’s the sheer paralysis of finding a safe place to live, particularly in the Bay Area with its high cost of living. Ana Castillo, who works for the Next Door Solutions (NDS) advocacy housing program, recounts a recent case about a client we will name “Angela”.

Survivor Story 8: My son altered the future

My toddler’s instinct to protect his mother enabled me to escape from the darkness. I asked myself: what am I doing? My abuser was removed from our shared home and I changed the locks. A police officer referred me to Next Door Solutions.

Farewell Note from Next Door Solutions’ Executive Director, Esther Peralez-Dieckmann

Next Door Solutions to Domestic Violence (NDS) is announcing the departure of its Executive Director, Esther Peralez-Dieckmann, as of February 28, 2022. Esther has been with Next Door Solutions since 2017. She led the organization through a stage of significant growth and successfully faced the challenges of transitioning services due to COVID.

50 years of Next Door Solutions | 1971-2021

In 1971, Bea Robinson Mendez, a victim of domestic violence, had little in the way of legal support, community advocacy, or a safe place to go. She recognized the lack of services to address the safety and unique needs of victims of domestic violence and their children. She rallied a group of friends, Latinas, and established a hotline number out of her garage, with each of the group members taking turns fielding the calls and providing information and support.
